These recommended guidelines for reroofing have been developed by the IRCC's Silicon Valley Chapter Technical Committee as a working outline for the California Roofing Industry's generally accepted standards for the application of roof decking, repairs, and roof system applications ranging from single-ply and modified bitumen to traditional BUR, composition roofing and tile. Our goal has been to provide a useful informational supplement on how reroofing is performed, which can assist other contractors, building inspectors and consumers in understanding the various types of roofing systems currently being installed and a general overview of how each system is constructed and applied by the roofing contractor here in Northern California.

We would like to share these recommended guidelines as part of the IRCC's ongoing effort to foster a greater awareness of roofing techniques and to promote technical education and the exchange of information between participating roofing contractors and the greater community of professional building inspectors who form the various regional chapters of the ICBO.

We understand that a few of our guidelines may in fact be contrary to some jurisdictions' requirements, or understandings as to certain reroofing applications. Again, these are only recommendations based on generally accepted techniques which have evolved and been tested over time as effective by contractors. Our approach to this document is that it is a start in a process, which can and should be modified and reworked to ensure timely applicability on an ongoing basis.
